What is Sea Salt?
Sea Salt is salt that has been harvested naturally from the ocean. This is done by collecting the ocean water in clay ponds and allowing the sun to naturally evaporate the water, leaving behind the salt.
Which Sea Salt is best for Cooking with?Choosing the best sea salt for cooking with is very much a personal preference. Salt is a taste inhibitor; nobody really understands why the flavors in food respond so well to various sea salts. When choosing a natural salt to cook with we suggest that you pair a salt crystal with the ingredients you are using. For example when cooking on the grill, a smoked salt will add deep wood flavors (like a Smoked Alderwood Sea Salt) or when dressing a salad a coarse sea salt (like a Celtic Salt) will add a zing and crunch to your meal. Most of our customers like to experiment with different sea salts.
Why are there so many different colors in sea salt?Salt is naturally hydroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture. When harvesting natural salt from the sea, the salt will retain the color from the clay ponds. This is why some sea salt is gray, black and even red. Rock salt gets its colors from the minerals in the earth.
Which is best for me: coarse ground or fine ground? This depends on how you intend to use your salt crystals. If you wish to put your salt in a grinder then a coarse ground may be a better choice. If you are looking to use salt in a shaker, then a finer ground sea salt will work better. Alternatively, you can use sea salts in larger grains to give your dishes an earthier burst of flavor. How does Sea Salt differ from Table Salt?Sea salt comes naturally from the oceans and is not processed with chemicals or anti-caking agents. It is normally about 84% pure sodium chloride with the reaming 16% made up of minerals and trace elements. Table Salt is normally rock salt that undergoes extreme heating, treatment with chemicals and centrifugal separation. The result is that this salt is 97.5% pure sodium chloride with no trace elements or minerals. The remaining 2.5% is made up of bleach and iodine additives.
Is Sea Salt Healthy?Sea salt is healthy when used in the correct dosage. Natural and unprocessed sea salt contains trace elements and minerals that our bodies need and use every day. Seasalt contains natural iodine as well as an abundance of other essential nutrients. Using natural salt wisely and reducing the amounts of processed foods in your diet can actually make salt an essential nutrient and not a health risk. Is Sea Salt the Same as Rock Salt?

How much Salt should I consume?Regardless of which type of sea salt you consume, the daily recommended intake for sea salt is 2300mg. Most consumers are not aware of how much salt they consume because most processed foods we eat contain table salt. Before highly processed foods were available, most families used table salt in their cooking and baking. It was very easy to regulate salt intake in the diet. Most processed foods add too much salt to enhance the flavors lost in the preparation of massed produced food.
